Summer Programs

In Summer 2009 the McGhee
Center will host
the following program:
Critical
Languages Institute in Beginning Turkish (June 20 – August 15,
2009)


In summer 2009 the McGhee Center will offer Intensive Accelerated
Beginning Turkish as part of the Critical Languages Scholarships
initiative. The program runs for eight weeks with twenty hours per
week of classroom instruction plus mandatory extra-curricular activities
including lectures, films, excursions, and gatherings with peers and
community leaders. Coursework will provide an introduction to
Turkish grammar and practice in conversational usage, literacy, and
comprehension. Extra curricular activities are designed to inform
participants about the host country and immerse them in its culture,
history, and geography, as well as to provide conversation practice and
social interaction with the host community. Classes meet daily M-F
8:00 AM – 12:15 PM. Lunch is included, served M-F 12:30
– 1:30 PM. Extracurricular activities and excursions will be
held in the early evenings and on Saturdays.
The
Critical Languages Scholarships initiative is administered by the
Council for American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) and funded by the
U.S. Department of State’s Bureau for Educational and Cultural
Affairs. Successful applicants receive full scholarships, travel,
and stipend. The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate
students and those who have recently completed degrees. Applicants
must be U.S.
citizens.
