Summer Programs

In Summer 2009 the McGhee Center will host the following program:

Critical Languages Institute in Beginning Turkish (June 20 – August 15, 2009)

In summer 2009 the McGhee Center will offer Intensive Accelerated Beginning Turkish as part of the Critical Languages Scholarships initiative.  The program runs for eight weeks with twenty hours per week of classroom instruction plus mandatory extra-curricular activities including lectures, films, excursions, and gatherings with peers and community leaders.  Coursework will provide an introduction to Turkish grammar and practice in conversational usage, literacy, and comprehension.  Extra curricular activities are designed to inform participants about the host country and immerse them in its culture, history, and geography, as well as to provide conversation practice and social interaction with the host community.  Classes meet daily M-F 8:00 AM – 12:15 PM.  Lunch is included, served M-F 12:30 – 1:30 PM.  Extracurricular activities and excursions will be held in the early evenings and on Saturdays.

The Critical Languages Scholarships initiative is administered by the Council for American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) and funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau for Educational and Cultural Affairs.  Successful applicants receive full scholarships, travel, and stipend.  The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students and those who have recently completed degrees.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
